Lake Logan Half Iron 2016 Race Report

Created: Sunday, 14 August 2016

My third 1/2 Iron distance race was at the Lake Logan Half Triathlon, just outside of Asheville, NC. The swim was wetsuit legal with 72 deg temps, in a very shallow lake. 1.2 mi in 45:21. I try to make up time in transition, had the 14th fastest. The bike had lots of challenging hills. 3,000 ft of climbing over 56 mi. I averaged 18.1 mph, max speed of 40 mph. Finished with the 23rd fastest time, 3:05:22. I blazed through T2 with 4th fastest time!!! Half of the 1/2 marathon run was uphill! I finished 32nd with a time of 2:24:09. Overall, I finished in 28th place, at 6:20:01. Keep reading for the more interesting details.

This is my second time racing this event. It is fun, and well organized. My goal was to beat last year’s time of 3:0027. It was much cooler last year, since it stormed the night before. The temperature had been in the mid 90s, and heat remained on race day. This made it very tough to beat my times, and I finished at 3:02:02. My second goal was not to be the slowest swimmer in my age group. I was the 2nd slowest last year. I improved with 11 folks slower than me this year. I still have a ways to go, but I’m making great progress. The bike and the run went well, but the sun and heat slowed me down, so I missed those goals. Overall, I am happy with my race.

Checking into my first Ironman event!
My first 1/2 Ironman distance race was a success! After a season full of success and blunders, victories and panic attacks, all the hard work and sacrifices have culminated in this, my biggest race thus far. I finished with a strong time just under 6 hours, actually it was 5:59:47. This report will give a quick race summary, followed by a much longer more detailed report.

This was my first race in the ocean! An Olympic distance triathlon: 0.9 mi swim, 26 mi bike, 6.2 mi run. I was understandably nervous swimming in unfamiliar conditions. The weather was perfect. The winds and waves were calm. This made the swim very manageable. My goals were to not be last in the swim, and I did that. I exceeded my goal on the bike with a 20.8 mph average, and maintained a strong run with a sub-9 min pace.

Transition area is all set upTransition area is all set upThis was my third Olympic distance race, and honestly, it sucked for me!  But I survived to race another day. The swim was two (2) 750 meter loops, 22 mile bike, then the run was two (2) 3.1 mi loops.  Despite the bad swim, I will take the lessons learned and build from it as head into my main race this year, Ironman 70.3 Augusta.
